Unlocking Ireland’s Net Zero Future with Renewable Liquid Gases

Download our full case study
Discover how we supported Liquid Gas Ireland's latest report, highlighting how renewable liquid gas could significantly accelerate Ireland’s rural net zero transition by 2050, meeting over 60% of current LPG demand through indigenous production.
The team showed a strong understanding of our ways of working as a trade association representative body and were able to adapt to the same while delivering.

The Client's Challenge
Ireland’s heating sector is a major contributor to emissions, accounting for 38% of energy-related emissions and nearly a quarter of total greenhouse gases. Heating presents a major decarbonisation challenge in rural areas, as heat pump adoption is limited and policy support for renewable liquid gas remains weak. This policy gap has led to underinvestment, dependence on imports, and missed opportunities to reduce emissions and improve energy security.
Recognising the strategic importance of LPG and BioLPG in Ireland’s energy mix, especially for off-grid heating and cooking, Liquid Gas Ireland (LGI) commissioned a consultancy to conduct modelling and analysis.
Talan's Solution
To explore how policy could unlock domestic renewable liquid gas production, Talan worked with Liquid Gas Ireland to model supply scenarios through 2050. The model included both co-production and dedicated production routes for rDME and bioLPG, drawing from anaerobic digestion, HVO, and SAF processes.
By working closely with LGI members, the team ensured the modelling reflected real-world industry conditions and infrastructure capabilities. The findings highlight how targeted policy support could significantly boost indigenous supply, reduce reliance on imports, and support Ireland’s energy transition, particularly for off-grid communities.
Our Impact
By integrating advanced modelling and industry collaboration, Talan’s work demonstrates how targeted policy support could unlock large-scale domestic production of renewable liquid gases like rDME, significantly reducing emissions and reliance on imports. Integrating our work into their report positions renewable liquid gas as a key enabler of Ireland’s net zero goals, especially for off-grid communities.
